Job Summary

Drive strategy on complex lawsuits from investigation through trial while advising claims and underwriting teams on coverage, negotiations, and legal developments. You’ll try cases, mentor staff, and keep litigation on track—ensuring strong results in and out of the courtroom.

Work Location

This position offers a hybrid work schedule. Candidates who are located within 50 miles of a West Bend office location will work a hybrid schedule for collaboration days, team meetings or other in-person events. The position can be based in West Bend, Madison or Appleton.

 

 

Responsibilities & Qualifications

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Claims Attorney to join our claims legal team. In this role, you will manage large and complex lawsuit files, provide guidance to trial attorneys, and represent the company and its policyholders in litigation. You’ll play a key role in shaping litigation strategy, conducting trials, and advising claims and underwriting teams on legal developments and coverage issues.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain short- and long-range litigation strategies for complex files.

  • Oversee case investigations and track progress on assigned matters.

  • Direct and advise claims trial attorneys on case strategy and individual issues.

  • Establish filing and hearing calendars for active cases.

  • Represent the company and its policyholders in trials.

  • Conduct in-depth legal research and provide counsel on coverage, negotiation, and evaluation.

  • Educate claims and underwriting departments on recent legal trends and policy implications.

  • Mentor and assist in training legal support staff.

  • Actively participate in community and civil affairs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience: 10+ years of insurance-related litigation and trial practice.

  • Education: Law degree (JD) from an accredited law school; member of the state bar where practicing.

  • Training: Completion of Program in General Insurance (preferred).

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.

Salary Statement

The salary range for this position is $135,000-$190,000.   

 

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.  Compensation decisions are made by West Bend and are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
