Job Summary

Provide expert legal counsel on complex coverage matters, guiding claims and underwriting teams with clear, practical advice. Conduct legal research, support policy form development, and help shape innovative coverage solutions. Serve as a trusted advisor, mentor, and representative of West Bend in both professional and community settings.

Work Location

This position offers a hybrid work schedule. Candidates who are located within 50 miles of a West Bend office location will work a hybrid schedule for collaboration days, team meetings or other in-person events. The position can be based in West Bend, Madison or Appleton.

We’re looking for an experienced Insurance Coverage Counsel who’s ready to combine legal expertise with business insight to shape products, guide coverage decisions, and support our claims and underwriting teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise claims professionals on complex coverage questions, policy interpretation, negotiation strategies, and case evaluations.

  • Conduct legal research and keep our teams informed about the latest developments in coverage-related case law.

  • Support policy form drafting and updates by partnering with teams across the company—translating legal concepts into clear, practical guidance.

  • Help shape product strategies and innovate coverage solutions for emerging risks.

  • Mentor others, share knowledge, and lead special projects that move the business forward.

  • Represent West Bend proudly in community and professional settings.

Your Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in insurance coverage analysis and litigation

  • Deep understanding of insurance operations—from product development to claims and regulatory compliance

  • Exceptional communication, analytical, and relationship-building skills

  • A collaborative, solutions-focused mindset

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

  • Active State Bar membership

  • Completion of the Program in General Insurance preferred

Salary Statement

The salary range for this position is $135,000-$155,000.   

 

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.  Compensation decisions are made by West Bend and are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
